Under new regulations, youngsters become eligible for a driver's permit only after completing 50 hours of supervised driving practice and hold a learner's permit for a least of six months before issuance of the formal license. This has had the effect of reducing accidents triggered by inexperienced drivers, and the initiative has gotten high marks by consumer safety groups. Distracted driver regulations, particularly those that focus on banning using mobile communication units for texting while driving, have also improved the state's status in traffic safety.
